We started our day reflecting in two different ways. Students had to finished the following sentences on sticky notes, "a terrific teacher is..., says..., does.... and doesn't.... Next, we repeated the same process but thinking about what makes a terrific classmate. I was very impressed with the thoughtful responses.
We talked about what reading and writing workshop should look like and sound like. We listed expectations to ensure everyone is able to learn. Then, we got busy with a writing activity. Students all were given a piece of paper with a squiggly line on it they needed to turn into a picture. Students each started their own squiggly line, but after a few minutes we began a process where we rotated throughout the rooms and worked on each other's paper trying to take "the vision" they may not have seen a few steps further. They had a lot of fun. Lastly, we handed back the paper to the original owner where they wrote about the scene that was created.
Teigue helped us smile at the end of the day by getting us to guess the 2 phrases on his "Watch the Mouth" cards.
